The province of Girona is situated to the north of Spain along the Costa Brava. The capital is a charming little town, an ideal place to visit in a few hours. We have prepared this one-day tour of Girona so you can wander the main streets of the city, the Jewish quarter, its most important museums, its rivers and even the largest urban park in Catalonia.
Within the crossroads of medieval streets stands the Jewish Quarter, El Call, where a small Jewish community lived until the late fifteenth century. This is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe.
These picturesque houses built over the centuries by the Oñar river give a splendid view of a small Mediterranean city.
This museum is dedicated to the history of the Jewish community of medieval Girona, from the eleventh century until their expulsion in 1492. The Museum has eleven rooms that make up a tour that relates aspects of daily life, culture and history.
Girona Cathedral, dedicated to St. Mary (Santa María), is at the highest point of the city and it has the widest Gothic nave in the world with a total width of 22.98 meters.
This tower is located at the highest point of the Roman wall. It was a defense tower in the Middle Ages that served as a refuge for Jews during the attack of 1391.
Located in the heart of the Old Town, in the former convent of the Capuchins, the museum looks at the history of the city of Girona, from the earliest prehistoric settlers, through the medieval splendor, until our days.
7. Arab Baths
At the foot of the walls of Girona, the Arab Baths are located. They are an example of civil Romanesque architecture of the 12th and 13th centuries.
The first archaeological materials from the museum, located in the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, come from Ampurias. The museum includes material from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages.
Opened in 1998, it is a unique museum in this category. Created from the donation of the private funds of the Catalan film director Tomas Mallol i Deulofeu, it contains a variety of film material, such as spraying machines, reels, original material and film notable posters.
10. Devesa Park
It is the largest urban park in Catalonia, located between the Ter, the Onar and Güell rivers, west of the historic city center. In one corner of the park are the Jardines de la Dehesa, a space surrounded by a stream in which you can see different species of interest.
