Yangshuo is one of those places that are still far from modernization of the modern world. With its rugged terrain and the traditional customs of its population, this small town in Guangxi province in China, located along rivers Lijiang and Yulong, has kept its charm intact: a picturesque karst landscape formed by small hills where the rice fields emerge. This panorama is so beautiful that the picture on the back of the 20 yuan notes was taken here.
In the surroundings there are some sites of particular beauty as Yueliang Shan, or Moon Hill, a limestone hill on whose summit there is a hole whose shape resembles the moon, which has become a place frequented by climbers from all over the world.
If you have in mind a trip to China, you cannot miss Yangshuo, which can be reached in just an hour by microbus from Guilin, one of the largest cities in the region.
In the town of Yangshuo, you can stroll through its streets full of markets that operate almost 24 hours a day. There is also a great food market on the main street where you can taste very cheap typical food, but we must keep in mind that if we choose to eat animals, it is possible that they can kill them in front of you. (Not for squeamish!)
For accommodation, hotels in Yangshuo are not too expensive and they have several categories, from cheap hostels as Charming Inn and River View Hotel suitable for backpackers, to comfortable resorts located in the city’s surroundings as Yangshuo Hidden Dragon Villa or Snow Lion Riverside Resort.
In addition, you can do many activities such as sailing the Yulong River on a traditional boat made of bamboo trunks (we recommend you to swim in the river, is a unique experience), rent a bike for very little money, explore the caves and take a mud bath in a natural pool and of course, visit the rice terraces located in the foothills of the mountains, a major source of income for the region.
Thanks very much to our friends of Océanos de Tierra and 101 lugares increíbles for their information about this incredible place.
